Recording in the app

My recording stops mid-run or when my phone is in my pocket – what can I do?

In most cases your phone shuts down the tracker itself to save battery – especially on Android and older devices. Allow Trait location access set to "Always", turn off battery optimization and power saving mode for your run, and don't run any other GPS apps at the same time.

That's annoying, and we get the frustration. In the vast majority of cases the cause isn't the app but the phone: many devices – especially Android phones and older models – check which app is responsible when the load or battery drain gets high. A GPS tracker needs a lot of processing power and battery and sits right at the top of that list. Some phones then simply shut it down, especially when they want to switch into a power saving mode. Less often, the culprit is a longer GPS or mobile network outage.

On newer, more powerful phones this shouldn't happen. These settings help in most cases:

  • Set location access for Trait to "Always allow" (not just "While using the app"). This is also the first thing to check if a workout won't start at all or can't find a GPS signal.
  • Turn off battery optimization / power saving mode for Trait in your phone settings so the system doesn't kill the app in the background.
  • Disable your phone's power saving mode during the run and start with enough battery.
  • Don't run any other GPS apps at the same time.

If a run has been lost anyway, you can manually check off the planned workout in Trait as done. That way your plan stays on track even if the data for that session is missing. If the run was saved without an error message, it's not gone – even if it isn't showing up in the calendar yet: Run saved but not in the calendar.
