How do cycling, strength training, swimming and other sports count towards my training load?

Other sports are imported and count towards your training load. Each activity is assigned to a sport class and receives load points, which are split between endurance impact and muscular impact. Your subjective rating after the workout is decisive. A share counts towards your training progress – but it doesn't fully replace running sessions.

Yes, Trait takes more than just your runs into account. Bike rides, strength training, swimming, tennis and other activities are imported from your watch or service and count towards your training load.

How an activity is assessed

  • Sport class: Each activity is assigned to a sport class based on its type. Each class has its own rules for how load points are awarded.
  • Your subjective rating: After the workout, Trait asks how strenuous it was (e.g. 10 out of 10). This input is central – for a strength workout, the data alone doesn't reveal how hard it really was. So please rate honestly.
  • Two types of impact: The points are split proportionally between endurance impact (cardiovascular) and muscular impact. Trait deliberately separates these two components: you can be fit in terms of endurance and still not be able to run a half marathon yet.

What this means for your plan

With an active plan, a share of the load from other sports counts towards your training progress. So if you're constantly cycling instead of running, you are making progress – but you can't fully replace running sessions. A coach would see it the same way: to be able to run, you have to run.

Additional load also affects your Readiness Score. After a hard tennis match, it can be noticeably lower than expected the next day – and you can view alternatives for today's session. How exactly that works is explained in the category “Adjusting your plan, illness & holidays”.

How to interpret your overall load is covered under How do I see my progress?
